Taylor Swift and Nick Cannon visited LSE

That's right Nick Cannon and Taylor Swift visited LSE this Wednesday through a live webcast sponsored by Scholastic. Many students listened to Taylor Swift answer questions from students about the importance of reading and how being a good reader has helped in writing songs and performing her music. Then she performed live for all the students singing one of her new songs off her new album.

I want to thank the teachers who chose to provide this opportunity for our students and Mr. Cain Cooksey for helping out with the tech side of the webcast.

Wow! What a neat opportunity.

Pizza Plate Kids

Pizza Plates is a reward system Mrs. Tennant uses to make transitions in the classroom more efficient. Students are recognized for doing a great job during transitions with stars that accumulate for the week. At the end of the nine weeks students with their name on the weekly winning plates at least three times may participate in the pizza party.

I must say the pizza was excellent. They were nice enough to share some with me.

Congratulations, to all the students who earned this treat!

Alpaca Visit

The students in first and third grades recently got to learn all about alpacas. Tom and Carman from Windchime Alpacas shared these unique animals with the students. Students learned about the animals and even got to pet them! First grade students have been reading all about animals and their young. The third grade classes have been studying different types of animals in science class. Learning about alpacas was a lot of fun for our students.

Read for the Record

Linton-Stockton Elementary Students participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record™ this year by reading The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Jumpstart’s world record breaking campaign that brings children and adults together to read the same book, on the same day, in homes and communities all over the world. This years campaign was trying to break a previous record of 2,000,000,000 people reading the same book. The campaign also kicks off Jumpstart’s yearlong program, preparing preschool children in low-income neighborhoods for success in school and life. Since it’s inception in 2006, the campaign has reached more than 3 million children and more than 750,000 books have been donated to children in low income neighborhoods.

Linton-Stockton students helped set this new world-record online, by reading the book, at www.wegivebooks.org. We Give Books donated a book to preschool students in need each time a class or students read this book on line.

I want to thank all the teachers that participated in this activity. It was a great opportunity to promote reading and help give to others in need. Please enjoy the pictures.

Cafeteria Line Changes

The maintenance, tech, and cafeteria staff have worked very hard over the summer and made a big change in our cafeteria service line. The maintenance staff installed new pieces of equipment in the serving line and added some electrical plugins for serving line to work effectively. Cafeteria staff attended training on the new lunch system that tracks what the students have been eating and how much money is in their account. They also had to rearrange staff to start serving the students their food. Remember, with the old serving line the students served themselves. The tech staff installed a new machine at the end of the line allowing us to have two lines for students to be able to get their food faster.

After our first week our students, teachers, custodians, and cafeteria staff have adjusted well to the new line and procedures. Students are learning their lunch numbers and are able to enter them faster and cafeteria staff made a few adjustments to make them more efficient.

I want to thank everyone who worked on this project and made it a success.

Reminder to Parents about the No Charge Breakfast and Lunch Policy

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT EFFECTIVE August 23, 2010, there will be no charging of breakfast or lunch fees allowed at Linton-Stockton Schools. This is in compliance with our Breakfast/Lunch No-Charging Policy, which was adopted by the Board of School Trustees on July 26, 2010, as follows:

The Linton Stockton School Corporation has adopted a “NO CHARGE” policy. Due to excessive charging in the past and the enormous amount of time involved in trying to collect these charges, charging of meals by students or adults beginning with the first day of student attendance for the 2010/2011 school year will not be permitted.

Funds must be deposited into a student’s meal account prior to breakfast or lunch for that day. It is the parents’ responsibility to see that their child(ren)’s meals are paid for and parents can fulfill this responsibility by paying for the meals themselves or by sending the meal money to the school with their child(ren). Any student without sufficient funds in his or her account will be offered a sandwich and a carton of milk. LSSC will provide this meal for two consecutive days. If sufficient funds have yet to be deposited into the student’s meal fund, the building principal and counselor will be notified so the next course of action can be determined. Please work with us to ensure that this never happens. It is not the school corporation’s intent to embarrass any person in any way.

The State of Indiana provides free/reduced application forms that are available in all school offices from the building secretaries, food service director, and kitchen managers. Applications MUST be filled out completely BEFORE being approved. If a household receives food stamps or state aid, please include the case number on the application. All of this information must be provided before the application can be approved. Please take advantage of this benefit if you think your family may qualify for free or reduced breakfast/lunch.

This policy applies to the Linton Stockton Elementary School, Junior High School, and High School.

Linton Stockton School Board of Trustees

Recommended by Linton Stockton School Food Service Director

The balance of the student’s food service account can be found on Harmony under “Food Service”.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT SUFFICIENT FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE STUDENT’S FOOD SERVICE ACCOUNT TO COVER ANY BREAKFAST OR LUNCH PURCHASES.

Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Drive

For several years, students at Linton-Stockton Elementary have had a pop tab drive for the Ronald McDonald House. This year we have had a great drive with collecting over 600 pounds of pop tabs.

The top three classes this year were Mrs. J. Irish's room with collecting 40 pounds of tabs, Mrs. Miller's class just behind them with 39 pounds, and Mr. Wade's class with 35 pounds. We want to thank everyone that helped our pop tab drive.

We want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Landis for sponsoring our pop tab drive.

Mr. Brewer completes IPLA Training

I have spent the last two years attending the Indiana Principal Leadership Adademy to help myself become a better principal and leader. I want to thank Linton-Stockton School Corporation and Linton Elementary Staff for supporting me while I attended this training.

Here is a brief explanation of the academy. Indiana Principal Leadership Academy (IPLA) was founded in 1985. The IPLA was created to be a national training model for principals, as leaders of instructors, empowered with effective behaviors and practices. The academy's focus is on four proficiencies: (1) leadership; (2) communication; (3) culture; and (4) school programs.

The picture above is a group of principals from around Indiana that were members of my study team. We posed for this picture after our graduation.

6th Grade Skyping with Roland Smith

Sixth-grade students at Linton-Stockton Elementary got to Skype with author Roland Smith. Students have read various books written by Mr. Smith this year. This allowed students to ask questions and speak directly to this famous author. Mr. Smith shared that he wanted to be a writer beginning at age five when his parents gave him a typewriter as a birthday gift. He gave students the advice to persevere when they are stuck on a particular piece of writing. He shared that he writes about topics that interest him. Some of his books have a spy theme which really interest students. He says that he also writes about topics on which he has a great amount of knowledge. Students enjoyed their visit with this engaging author.

Play 30 Winners

We had several students meet the criteria this month for exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. Sailor Myers, Ben Burris, and Andrew Woods met the Play 30 requirements and were the lucky winners for the Play 30 drawing.
